Here is a summary of some of my most recent work. If you want to see more, please contact me.
Presentations
DeMarini Sports - I made two presentations about market research performed in Japan. The first was divided into two sections: marketing and logistics. Individual slides contained photographs rather than text, allowing all of the presenters to explain what was seen in Japan rather than what was inferred. The second presentation was less visual to enable an open discussion of the content with the clients.
Phoenix Industries - This was an entrepreneurial experiment (not real) that sold children’s play structures in China. This slide-set was the second incarnation of the presentation, focusing more on selling the idea than fitting the slides to a particular theme. This was a bare-bones project that accomplished its goal of disseminating quality data in a concise, consistent fashion.
Bailo - Bailo is a high-end Italian ski apparel company that I first discovered during graduate school while in China. I had the opportunity to mock up a market-expansion proposal and used their growing business model as a base. The only problem I ran into with this presentation was the logo - I could only find low-res images online and had to build a new graphic entirely from scratch. Everything worked out well, and I’m proud of the end result.
Visual Design
Jumping Duck Media - In April, 2008, I took the plunge and started my own publishing company. It’s more of a hobby than a business, but creating the company image has still been exciting. I focus on encouraging people to shrug off their fears and “jump right in” to whatever it is they’ve been dreaming of but holding back from. The logo is a sketch of a duckling jumping from the shore into a lake or stream - a challenging undertaking for anyone/anything without much experience.
Dot2dot - I had the chance to build a company from the ground up as part of a marketing competition. Part of the competition involved a marketing plan presentation for potential investors. Our multi-faceted plan included television, radio, and print ads as well as a trade show setup. While the whole team of three brainstormed, we divvied up the project to save time. I was responsible for concepting the trade show booth.
Unnamed Outdoors Enterprise - For a while, I was engaged in the development of an outdoors equipment review company. The company would have reviewed equipment and rated new releases in terms of functionality, quality, affordability, and durability. Throughout the planning stages, I developed several different brand concepts. The most popular concept, “what is your identity,” focused on emphasizing the “everyman” nature of clients who were average people during the week, but who became adrenaline junkies during the weekend.
Creative Advertising - In mid-2008, I partnered with Oregon Career Management Solutions to create and release an online version of their popular face-to-face career coaching system, Career Crossroads. Among other things, I helped create, deploy, and manage advertising for the new system. This is a print-ad I created to simulate a news clipping of a classified advertisement. To avoid copyright infringement, I created “bleed ads” to surround our copy and “faked” this section of the classifieds.
Research
DeMarini Sports - DeMarini Sports, a high-end baseball manufacturing company and subsidiary of Wilson Sporting goods, was trying to build its reputation and market share in Japan. They wanted a close look at their marketing efforts in Japan and recommendations on branding and promotions. In addition, they wanted a hands-on analysis of their Japanese distribution system to determine whether or not there was a possibility of improvement. Following a week-trip to Tokyo, my team and I presented both what we saw and what we learned from consumer interviews to DeMarini’s managers. They will be moving forward with many of our recommendations and we hope to see improvements soon.
Portland State University - International Student Experience - The administrators at PSU wanted to better understand the expectations of international students entering the University. They also wanted to know the level of satisfaction graduating students had with their education. Through an online survey and extensive statistical analysis, my team and I were able to predict how likely graduating students were to recommend the University to their peers. We also isolated performance factors for the University that influenced this “willingness to recommend.”
Portland State University - Environmental Legitimacy - Two professors at PSU are involved in an on-going project that correlates the environmental reporting practices of corporations with their bottom lines. We evaluated the amount of environmental transparency in the annual reports (including environmental reports and 10-k filings) of 152 companies covering a span of three years. Researchers still involved in the project are now analyzing the correlation between these results and the companies’ annual incomes.
